The Lamb Shift and Ultra High Energy Cosmic Rays

چکیده

On the analogy with the Lamb shift, we study the vacuum effect that proton’s electric field interacts with virtual particles in the vacuum. We find a possible quantum instability that triggered by an external force, proton’s electric field interacting with virtual particles spontaneously induces a quantum force that back reacts on the proton in the direction of the external trigger force. Such a quantum-induced force accelerates the proton runaway, by gaining the zero-point energy from the vacuum (∼ 10 eV/cm). This effect possibly accounts for the mysterious origin and spectrum of ultra high-energy cosmic ray (UHECR) events above 10eV, and explains the puzzle why the GZK cutoff is absent. The candidates of these events could be primary protons from the early Universe.

Comment on “The Lamb Shift and Ultra High Energy Cosmic Rays” and Comment on “Vacuum Polarization Energy Losses of High Energy Cosmic Rays”

The cosmic ray spectrum has been shown to extend well beyond 10eV. With nearly 20 events observed in the last 40 years, it is now established that particles are accelerated or produced in the universe with energies near or above 10eV. No nearby astrophysical object has been shown to correlate with the arrival directions of the highest energy events, yet the exponential cut-off in the high energ...

A search for correlations of TeV gamma rays with ultra-high-energy cosmic rays

A search was conducted for TeV -rays emitted from the direction of the ultra–high-energy cosmic ray detected by the Fly’s Eye experiment with energy E 3 1020 eV. No enhancement was found at a level of 10 10 cm 2 s 1 for E > 350 GeV. A steady source of ultra–high-energy cosmic ray protons or photons would be expected to produce a -ray flux above this level. An upper limit was also set for the fl...

Some Current Theoretical Issues around Ultra-high Energy Cosmic Rays *

We address some current theoretical issues around ultra-high energy cosmic rays. We recall that scenarios producing more γ−rays than cosmic rays up to high redshift can in general only provide a sub-dominant contribution to the ultra-high energy cosmic ray flux. This includes extra-galactic top-down and the Z-burst scenarios. Finally we discuss the influence of large scale cosmic magnetic field...

Loop Quantum Gravity Effects on the High Energy Cosmic Ray Spectrum

Recent observations on ultra high energy cosmic rays (those cosmic rays with energies greater than ∼ 4× 10 eV) suggest an abundant flux of incoming particles with energies above 1× 10 eV. These observations violate the Greisen-Zatsepin-Kuzmin cutoff. To explain this anomaly we argue that quantum-gravitational effects may be playing a decisive role in the propagation of ultra high energy cosmic ...
